Movie Review: Pineapple Express

Pineapple Express is a stoner movie: a movie about characters who use/abuse marijuana. They can only barely manage to navigate their normal lives under the constant influence of MJ, much less while in the extremely trying circumstances the film's story throws them into.

I'm going to keep this really short, since the movie doesn't warrant anything more:
1. All of the best parts of the movie were in the trailers, if in truncated form.
2. Having never taken any drug more powerful than Tylenol, I suspect that most stoner movies are genuinely better when actually under the influence of whatever drug they espouse.
3. I had forgotten how much it REALLY bothers me that there is an entire growing subculture in America that thinks that legalizing drugs is a good idea and tries to idealize the use of marijuana.
4. James Franco, of emo-Spiderman fame (he was Peter Parker's best friend), was absolutely the best part of the movie--he was so different than I've ever seen him that it was refreshing and great.
5. Seth Rogan is really funny, but is exactly the same character in every movie. Character names aside, 40-year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad, and Pineapple Express all follow Rogan's singular character. This is not bad, but gets old...
6. Danny McBride is way funnier than he's given credit for--see Tropic Thunder for further proof.

In the end, the plot and structure of the film were better than I expected, but realistically, I had low expectations. I had a ticket to see The Mummy 3, but knew it would be awful, so I slipped into Pineapple Express instead. That's the first time I've ever done that, and I was glad I did. But in retrospect, I wish I'd sneakeded (sp?) into The Dark Knight. That was an awesome movie.
